Ten more people have died from the coronavirus in Pennsylvania, and the state added nearly 700 new cases of the virus between Sunday and Monday, state health officials said.
Deaths in the state now total 48, and 693 new cases bring the statewide total to 4,087.
It’s the largest one-day increase in cases so far, and it includes 25 new cases in Allegheny County. Philadelphia eclipsed 1,000 cases, rising from 865 to 1,007 in one day. Seven people have died in the county.
In Westmoreland, cases rose from 47 to 55, and Beaver County recorded 16 new cases for a total of 44. Fayette and Greene counties each added one new case, rising to 11 and seven, respectively.
Somerset, Indiana and Armstrong counties did not record any new cases. Lawrence County, which reported its first case Wednesday, now has 10 cases, and one person has died.
The state originally reported 11 new deaths Monday but later corrected the number to 10.
A majority of coronavirus patients are between 25 and 49, according to Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine – about 41%. Most of those hospitalized, however, are 65 or older. A majority of the deaths have also fallen into that age group too, she said.
“We need everyone to listen to the orders in place and to stay calm, stay home and stay safe,” Levine said. “We know that these prolonged mitigation effects have been difficult for everyone, but it is essential that everyone follows these orders and does not go out unless they absolutely must.”
State epidemiologist Dr. Sharon Watkins said health care workers make up about 4% of the cases. Fewer than 1% of patients are nursing home residents.
Since the first case was reported in the state on March 6, about 386 people with the virus have needed to be hospitalized for some amount of time. Of those, 110 required admission to an intensive care unit and 67 needed breathing assistance from a ventilator.
