Pa. passes 500,000 covid cases

Pennsylvania reported 9,556 new covid cases and 270 new deaths Tuesday, according to the state Department of Health.

Total cases and total deaths in the state are now 509,320 and 12,890, respectively. There have been 147,856 covid-19 cases and 2,507 deaths reported in December.

With the state passing 500,00 covid-19 cases Tuesday, here’s a breakdown of when cases surpassed certain milestones:

100,000 cases: July 18

200,000 cases: Oct. 28

300,000 cases: Nov. 21

400,000 cases: Dec. 5

500,000 cases: Dec. 15

Tuesday’s new deaths are the most reported in a single day so far in December. It also was the fifth time in the first 15 days of December that 200 or more deaths were reported. As a result, the seven-day death total from Dec. 9 to Tuesday is 1,348, a record.

In the state, there are 6,295 covid-19 patients hospitalized as of Tuesday, with 1,264 in the ICU and 705 on ventilators, according to DOH data. There are 559 adult ICU and 2,722 medical/surgical beds available in Pennsylvania, according to the DOH covid-19 dashboard. Those numbers equate to 15% and 13% of total beds, respectively.
