A child hunting with family missed a deer and shot a 71-year-old man in the head, killing him.
The tragedy happened around 10 a.m. Saturday in Jackson Township, Cambria County, as WJAC-TV in Johnstown reports.
The victim is identified as 71-year-old William Tripp of Elizabethtown. Tripp was hunting with family and friends when he was accidentally shot in the head by a young relative who was not identified in the report.
Cambria County coroner Jeff Lees told WJAC that a minor relative of Tripp’s was attempting to shoot a deer, but the child missed the shot and the bullet struck Tripp, who was approximately 300 yards away.
Tripp was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lees called the incident a “heart-wrenching” accident.
