Pa. covid hospitalizations increase slightly for 1st time in 2 weeks

After about two weeks of decreasing covid hospitalizations in the state, the streak ended with Tuesday’s numbers.

Albeit slight, covid hospitalizations increased to 3,821 on Tuesday in Pennsylvania, after dropping for 12 consecutive days. Prior to this stretch, covid hospitalizations last increased on Jan. 20 when the total went up to 4,882. Since then, hospitalizations dropped about 1,600 over the stretch to 3,820 on Monday.

Tuesday also saw an additional 4,410 covid cases and 125 covid deaths added to the state’s total. Total cases and deaths now stand at 850,488 and 21,812, respectively.

Of the newly reported deaths, one is from February, 119 are from January and five are from December. With the additional deaths reported Tuesday, 10 of the last 14 days have seen reported deaths exceed 100.

Compared to recent months, the average of newly reported cases is down. The seven-day average of daily cases Tuesday (Feb. 2) was 5,428. On Jan. 2, the average was 7,450 and on Dec. 2, the average was 6,800.

In Western Pennsylvania, Allegheny and Westmoreland counties added the most covid cases Tuesday. Allegheny reported 300 cases, while Westmoreland reported 117.
