Evan McPherson’s 52-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship was his 12th field goal of at least 50 yards in 20 games this season. The Los Angeles Rams have “allowed” 12 field goals of at least 50 yards … in 54 games over the last three seasons. McPherson led the NFL with nine 50-yard field goals in the regular season, missing Blair Walsh’s rookie record by one kick, and, after connecting on the go-ahead field goal against the Kansas City Chiefs, has missed only two of his 14 attempts from 50-plus yards. His Super Bowl counterpart, Matt Gay, meanwhile, missed two of his six attempts from 50-plus yards.

Gay, however, hit two kicks of at least 55 yards – both 55-yarders – to McPherson’s one – 58 yards – and has the same career-long kick, a 58-yarder as a rookie in 2019.
McPherson attempted a field goal of at least 50 yards in 10 different games this season. And he made at least one such field goal in eight different games. And Gay’s six attempts of 50-plus yards came in six different games, including a (missed) 54-yard attempt in the NFC Championship. Gay hasn’t made a kick from at least 50 yards since Week 15.
