A waitress in New York City was fired from her job for not getting the covid-19 vaccine.
The woman had been working for the Red Hook Tavern, whose management reportedly gave her the boot on Monday after she expressed she wasn’t looking to get vaccinated. The restaurant told her that they respected her choice, but “at this time (her) employment will be terminated.”
The New York Post reports that the Brooklyn-based restaurant had emailed their staff that the vaccine was “mandatory” for all of them a few days before. According to the email obtained by the Post, the only exceptions were “(if) your own personal health or disability prohibits you from obtaining this vaccination.”
While Bonnie Jacobson didn’t particularly fall into either of these categories, the 34-year-old stated she didn’t want to get the covid-19 vaccine because she was worried it may affect her chances of having a baby with her husband in the future.
Jacobson is one of many women who have begun to voice their concerns regarding the vaccine’s effect on pregnancy and breastfeeding. While the CDC has made brief mention of the vaccine’s side effects on pregnancy on its website, publications such as The New Yorker have noted how whether or not to get vaccinated is presenting quite the dilemma to women looking to grow their families.
Jacobson additionally stressed that she’s not an anti-vaxxer in the least, and that she “fully supports” those who intend to or who have already received the vaccine.
“The way I see it, getting the vaccine is for me,” explains Jacobson. “It protects me. If I am not getting it, it’s my choice, and I’d only be hurting myself.”
