Mt. Pleasant man enjoyed picking bluegrass

Homer Emerick enjoyed fishing in Wills Creek in Somerset County, but there wasn’t much that made him happier than sitting down with an acoustic instrument, a few friends, and doing a bit of picking.
“His thing was always music,” said his son Scott Emerick of Kecksburg. “He had a violin, banjo, guitar, mandolin and he and his friends from Fairhope had their own little group. They would go and play music at community centers and other places.”
Homer H. Emerick Sr. of Mt. Pleasant died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019. He was 84.
Mr. Emerick was born March 5, 1935, in Fairhope, a son of the late Ira and Carrie Emerick. He grew up in Fairhope, and after marrying his late wife Betty, the couple settled down in Kecksburg to raise a family.
“We spent a lot of weekends going to my grandparents’ farm out in Fairhope,” Scott said.
In 1958, Mr. Emerick was deployed overseas with the Army during the Korean War.
“If you asked him, he would talk about it, but he didn’t discuss it all that much,” Scott said.
Mr. Emerick was employed for several decades at Lenox Crystal in Mt. Pleasant, pressing glass.
Scott said his father enjoyed making music and making people happy.
“He was definitely a person you’d remember,” Scott said. “He was very outgoing. Once you met him, you didn’t forget him.”
Mr. Emerick is survived by his children, Sandy Emerick and Scott Emerick of Mt. Pleasant and Homer Emerick Jr. of Jeannette; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four siblings.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Clyde Brooks Funeral Home, 146 Municipal Road, Melcroft. An 11 a.m. funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday.
Interment will follow in Hickman Chapel Cemetery, with military honors.
