Hempfield student to receive Hispanic Heritage award in Miami

Jaylen Barrientos-Collins, a senior at Hempfield Area High School, will be one of six students to receive the Hispanic Heritage Foundation’s annual National Youth Award on Thursday in Miami.

Of Dominican descent, Barrientos-Collins was chosen for his leadership in the classroom and the community and for his focus on the “priority” category of business and entrepreneurship, the foundation said in a statement.

The six award recipients were chosen from hundreds of regional candidates and almost 13,000 applicants. They and their families will be flown to Miami for the ceremony, scheduled for 8 p.m. Thursday at the Telemundo Center in Miami.

Barrientos-Collins, who hopes to complete five business-related courses in his senior year, won first place in the business law category at the regional Future Business Leaders of America competition. He also participated in Columbia University’s Sports Industry Essentials Program and Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week.

Barrientos-Collins plans to study business administration in college and to work in sports management.
