On the latest episode of the Food Podcast presented by Clearview Federal Credit Union on the TribLIVE podcast network, the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank focuses on sugar.

With Halloween right around the corner, kids, and lots of adults, will be eating a large amount of candy.

“Halloween is a special occasion, it doesn’t happen every day and what we eat on a daily basis and a regular basis is far more important and reflects our inner health ultimately,” said the Food Bank’s nutrition and wellness coordinator Erin Spangler.

Spangler says the danger comes when you’re snacking on items with added sugar, like candy, on a regular basis.

“What we’re really concerned about from a diet standpoint is added sugars. When you’re eating something like a banana or drinking a glass of milk, yes there are sugars in there, but there are tons of other nutrients in there,” said Spangler.

Finding the amount of added sugars is food products is actually much easier than before.

Spangler says as of 2020, food manufacturers now have to include the amount of added sugars on their food labels.

“You’ll now see when you read the side of a label, it will say total sugar, but right underneath that it will say includes X number of added sugar. That makes it so much easier for consumers,” said Spangler
