Heat forces 39 Pittsburgh public schools to move to remote learning

Pittsburgh Public Schools announced it will transition students and staff to remote learning Tuesday and Wednesday at more than half its schools because of hot weather.

Thirty-nine facilities that lack air conditioning will be closed as the district triggers its extreme heat protocol.

Teachers will conduct classes over Microsoft Teams.

The impacted facilities include:

  • Allderdice
  • Arsenal PreK-5 and 6-8
  • Banksville
  • Beechwood
  • Brookline
  • Carrick
  • Chartiers
  • Clayton
  • Colfax
  • Concord
  • Crescent
  • Dilworth
  • Fulton
  • Grandview
  • Greenfield
  • Liberty
  • Lincoln
  • Linden
  • Manchester
  • Mifflin
  • Miller
  • Montessori
  • Morrow Intermediate Building
  • Morrow Primary Building
  • Northview Heights Early Childhood Center
  • Perry
  • Phillips
  • Roosevelt Primary
  • Schiller
  • Science and Technology
  • Spring Garden
  • Spring Hill
  • Sterrett
  • Student Achievement Center
  • Weil
  • Westinghouse
  • Westwood
  • Whittier

Ebony Pugh, a spokeswoman for the district, said the district closes facilities that don’t have air conditioning once temperatures are projected to reach 85 degrees or hotter or the heat index is forecast to reach 90 degrees.

The National Weather Service is predicting a high temperature of 89 degrees Tuesday and 88 degrees Wednesday.

The extreme heat protocol is triggered to avoid the risk of heat-related illness for students and staff, according to the district’s website.

Pugh said the district’s facilities plan includes looking into installing air conditioning in schools and other buildings.

The district has 54 schools.

Grab-and-go meals will be available Tuesday and Wednesday from 7 a.m. till 9 a.m. at the following locations:

  • Pittsburgh Chartiers
  • Pittsburgh Westwood
  • Pittsburgh Morrow Intermediate Campus
  • Pittsburgh Perry
  • Northview Heights Early Childhood Center
  • Pittsburgh Arsenal
  • Pittsburgh Colfax
  • Pittsburgh Fulton
  • Pittsburgh Greenfield
  • Pittsburgh Student Achievement Center
  • Pittsburgh Miller
  • Pittsburgh Brookline
  • Pittsburgh Concord
  • Pittsburgh Grandview
  • Pittsburgh Phillips
  • Pittsburgh Roosevelt Primary Campus
