The Pittsburgh Board of Public Education is asking for as much community input as possible during its national search to select a permanent superintendent to lead Pittsburgh Public Schools, the region’s largest school district.

The board is holding several upcoming community forums to gather input from residents and interested parties. The public is encouraged to participate.

“There is no more important decision we will make as a board than selecting the right superintendent for our district,” said Board President Sala Udin. “Community engagement is an essential part of this process.”

Pittsburgh Public Schools has been without a permanent superintendent since former Superintendent Anthony Hamlet resigned in October, following criticism of his handling of covid lockdowns and state Ethics Act violations regarding his travel expenses.

Since last fall, Wayne Walters has served as interim superintendent, but the PPS board wants to have a permanent superintendent in place by the start of next school year.

Consulting firm BWP & Associates is leading the national search, and the firm will use information gathered during a series of one-on-one interviews, small focus groups, community forums to help guide its process.

Then, the nine-member PPS board will make the final hiring decision.

Feedback can be provided through a Community Input Survey found at pghschools.org/superintendentsearch. The deadline to complete this survey is May 18. It is available in English and will also be available in Spanish, Arabic, Nepali, Pashto, Swahili and Russian starting May 11.

Community forums are scheduled for May 11 and May 12, across multiple locations.
