Allegheny County schools offered chance to produce a Disney musical
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has been awarded a grant to bring the Disney Musicals in Schools program to Allegheny County.
The program, developed by Disney Theatrical Group to create theater programs in elementary schools with limited resources to do so, will be spearheaded by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s arts education department.
Any elementary school in Allegheny County that operates under a Title I Schoolwide Status is eligible.
“The Trust Arts Education Department is incredibly proud to partner with Disney Musicals in Schools to bring this exciting program to schools in our region,” said Tracy Edmunds, vice president of arts education in a statement. “Many schools lack the resources required to develop and sustain musical theater programs. Disney Musicals in Schools will help to bring musical theater to educators and students who have been unable to enjoy the magic of theater in their schools.”

Four public elementary schools will be selected to participate in a 17-week musical theater residency.
Each school will receive performance rights, education support materials and guidance from the teaching artists. The children will learn how to produce, direct, choreograph and music direct, culminating in their first 30-minute Disney KIDS musical at their school.
Each school will perform one number from their show on May 19 at the Byham Theater in Downtown Pittsburgh.
Applications are due Oct. 18.
Disney Musicals in Schools launched in 2010.
