Makeida Thompson was set to have a final hearing Friday on the protection from abuse order she’d taken out against the father of her youngest child.

She never got the chance, Pittsburgh police said, because the same man allegedly walked into a home in East Liberty on Tuesday and shot Thompson to death, saying as he fled “that’s what you get.”

Terrence Anthony Washington, 36, is charged with homicide and firearms violations in connection with Thompson’s death.

Police responded to a home on Rippey Street just after 11 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a shooting, according to the criminal complaint. They found Thompson, 32, dead on the couch from multiple gunshots to her head, and investigators recovered seven casings and a live bullet at the scene.

A witness who was in the home at the time of the shooting told police Thompson was sitting on the couch when Washington, who the witness knew as Terrence Zeppenfeldt, pulled out a gun and began shooting, according to the complaint.

The witness told police that as Washington fled, he said something along the lines of, “That’s what you get for trying to keep my kid from me,” according to the complaint.

The criminal complaint indicated at least one of Thompson’s children was in the room at the time of the shooting.

Court records show Thompson had taken out a temporary PFA against Washington on Nov. 5, and a final hearing was scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday. The PFA awarded Thompson temporary custody of the 1-year-old child she had with Washington.

The order also barred Washington from having or buying any firearms, and police noted that his license to carry had been revoked. Washington was supposed to hand over all guns and ammunition to police or an approved third party within 24 hours. It was not clear Thursday if Washington had complied.

The charges against Washington were filed Tuesday, and court records indicated Washington was not in custody as of Thursday morning.
