Winners at the Youngwood Sportsmen’s Association’s annual Youngwood Charity Turkey Shoot get more than just bragging rights. They’ll get the satisfaction of knowing they’ve helped a family in need put a Thanksgiving meal on the table.
“Last year, we were able to donate 50 complete dinners to local families,” said association President Ed Sadler. “In addition, we donated $1,000 to the Westmoreland County Food Bank.”
With 1,700 members, the association has plenty of options for effective fundraising. But for this year’s turkey shoot on Sunday, it will open up the competition to the general public as well.
Participants can pay $4 to join a group of 10 on a shooting line, and the closest shot to the “X” from each line will have a turkey dinner donated in their name. Proceeds from the shoot will offset the cost of the dinners, and any additional money will be donated to the Westmoreland Food Bank.
Westmoreland Food Bank officials said their need for donations has drastically increased with the end of additional covid-era SNAP benefits and a rise in inflation.
Food bank CEO Jennifer Miller told the Trib in early November that her staff is seeing about 8,000 families each month, and the organization is down “substantially” in both food product and monetary donations.
Sadler is hoping for another successful year at the turkey shoot to try and help out.
“Everyone came out for a really good cause last year,” he said. “We had people showing up just to drop off donations. You don’t get a lot of events that are just a whole lot of fun like this.”
The Youngwood Charity Turkey Shoot will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Youngwood Sportsmen’s Association, 196 Sportsmen Road in Hempfield.
