Westmoreland County sees lowest week of new covid cases in nearly 3 months
Westmoreland County saw 10 new cases of coronavirus added to its total Friday, capping a week in which the county saw the lowest number of new instances since mid-June.
The new cases, reported by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, make 72 new coronavirus cases in the county in the past seven days. That’s the fewest amount of new cases since the week of June 13-19, when 27 cases were added.
Among the new cases, seven were confirmed, three are probable.
In the weeks since mid-June, Westmoreland County — like some others in Pennsylvania — has seen its cases rise, many weeks posting well over 100 new cases. Last week, 93 cases were added; the week before that (Aug. 15-21) it was 103 cases.
For a 16th straight day, the county saw no new deaths related to covid-19. It’s the second longest amount of time the county has gone without a new death; the longest: 49 days (May 19-July 6). To date, 49 Westmoreland County residents have died from coronavirus.

According to the state’s covid-19 tracking website, three Westmoreland County residents are currently hospitalized for the virus, two of them on a ventilator.
A total of 39,976 people have been tested for the virus in the county, with 1,861 testing positive — at a positivity rate of 4.66%.
