Westmoreland County reports 8 new covid deaths, most in a week

Westmoreland County reported eight new covid deaths Tuesday, tying the second largest daily total this month.

The most coronavirus-related deaths thus far in January were reported Jan. 6, when 16 were reported. Eight deaths were also reported Jan. 5.

Tuesday also saw 207 new covid cases reported in Westmoreland County. Of those cases, 132 are confirmed through 449 PCR tests. Cases in the county had been in decline in recent days, dropping daily since 346 cases were reported Jan. 8. That streak ended Tuesday when 207 cases were reported after Monday’s 173 case count.

In January thus far, there have been 2,900 cases and 68 deaths reported. Total cases in the county now stand at 22,233 and total deaths are now at 491.

As of Tuesday, there are 157 covid-19 patients hospitalized in the county, with 17 in the ICU and 13 on ventilators. According to the state Department of Health, there are 22 ICU and 72 medical/surgical beds available, which represent about 24% of both types of beds.
