Westmoreland County posts 574 new covid cases, 4 deaths over 2 days

Westmoreland County posted 574 new cases of coronavirus over the past two days, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The county added 213 cases on Sunday, 361 on Monday. Of the new two-day cases, 75% (430) were confirmed through PCR tests, while 144 were considered probable cases.

There were four more covid-related deaths reported among Westmoreland County residents — three on Sunday, one on Monday. There have been 55 deaths reported in the county over the past seven days.

Westmoreland had the fourth highest number of new covid cases in the state Monday. The county with the most was Allegheny (781), followed by Lehigh (382) and York (368). Westmoreland’s 361 was fourth, followed by Delaware (340), Northampton (320) and Bucks (303).

Sunday-Monday’s new cases in the county were 13.8% lower than last week’s two-day mark (666). The county’s current seven-day case average of 360 is 11.5% lower than last Monday (407).

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports there are 177 Westmoreland County residents hospitalized for covid-19, with 20 of them in the intensive care unit and 12 on a ventilator.

The county’s seven-day average number of patients in the hospital increased 22.3% from 139 last week to 170 the past seven days.

The state reports there are 21% of the county’s ICU beds available, a decrease from last week’s 28% availability.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in March, Westmoreland County has amassed 16,777 covid-19 cases, 12,814 of them confirmed through PCR tests. A total of 70,913 Westmoreland County residents have tested negative for the virus.
