Westmoreland County nears goal of 250 monarch butterfly way stations
Westmoreland County is more than halfway through its goal of establishing 250 way stations for monarch butterflies this year.
The goal was set in conjunction with the county’s 250th anniversary. To date, 165 monarch way stations have been established.
FirstEnergy and the Westmoreland Pollinators Partners consortium are assisting in the program to help feed migrating butterflies. The way stations are small areas that feature native milkweed and flowering nectar plants.
Applications are available online to designate a property as a monarch way station.
Until the goal of 250 stations is achieved, a corporate donation from FirstEnergy and the county’s 250th Anniversary Initiative will cover the $18 certification fee and additional $18 cost for a metal monarch way station sign.
