As the month winds down, covid cases and deaths in Westmoreland County continue to make December the county’s worst month of the pandemic.
There were 302 new covid-19 cases and nine deaths reported Tuesday. Those figures bring total cases to 17,079 and 358 total deaths in the county. This month, there have been 7,818 cases and 159 deaths reported.
December’s cases represent 45% of total cases and the month’s deaths mark 44% of total deaths. At the current rate of cases, it’s possible, if not likely, that 50% of Westmoreland County’s covid cases could come in December.

At that time, the seven-day total of cases was 3,284 and seven-day average was 469. On Tuesday, those figures had decreased to 2,717 and 325, respectively.
In the county, there were 178 covid-19 patients hospitalized as of Tuesday, with 20 in the ICU and 12 on ventilators, according to Pennsylvania Department of Health data. There are 19 ICU and 65 medical/surgical beds available in Westmoreland County, per the DOH covid-19 dashboard. That represents about 21% of total ICU and 21% of total medical/surgical beds.
