Westmoreland County breaks new covid case record for 2nd straight day

Westmoreland County has again broken the record for new covid-19 cases in the county, a day after the previous record was broken.

There were 657 new covid cases reported Friday, surpassing Thursday’s record of 505 cases. In the past two days, 1,162 cases have been reported. It previously took the county 124 days, from when cases were first reported March 19 to July 20, to reach the case total of the last two days.

The seven-day average of daily covid cases in the county is now 367 and the seven-day total is 2,571, both record figures.

Total cases in Westmoreland County now stand at 13,026. In December thus far, 3,765 cases have been reported.

On Friday, there were also seven new coronavirus-related deaths reported in Westmoreland County. The death total now stands at 280. Of the total deaths, 81 have come in the first 11 days of December.

In the county, 136 covid-19 patients are hospitalized as of Friday, with 19 in the ICU and 11 on ventilators, according to state Department of Health data.
