Westmoreland County saw its coronavirus case count increase by 43 over the past two days, according to a report Monday from the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The county had 22 new cases on Sunday and 21 new ones on Monday, the department figures showed.

One new Westmoreland County death related to covid-19 was announced, a death that happened Sept. 21, according to state data.

Monday’s announcement makes six deaths in the past 12 days in the county. Before Sept. 17, it took the county 51 days to reach six deaths.

According to the state’s covid-19 tracking website, there are currently 12 county residents in the hospital for the virus, with one of them on a ventilator. According to the state, there are 88 operational ventilators in the county, with eight (9%) currently in use for all illnesses.

Recently, Westmoreland Manor in Hempfield has seen a spike of cases — with 47 residents and 21 workers tested positive. The National Guard has been called in to assist with testing.

On Friday, Department of Health Press Secretary Nate Wardle addressed the recent increase in cases and deaths in the county, saying, “While that increase (at Westmoreland Manor) is of particular concern, it also shows there is significant community spread occurring in the county.”

Over the past seven days, 162 new covid cases have been detected in the county. It’s the highest seven-day total since July 14-20 (165).
