The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported Monday that 214 new cases of coronavirus were added over the past two days in Westmoreland County.
Cases seem to be on the decline in the county. This week’s Sunday-Monday total is 47% lower than last week’s (404) and 63% below the similar period in December (574).
Among the new cases, 164 were confirmed through 708 PCR tests, while 50 were listed as probable. Health officials define a probable case as one in which a patient has a positive viral antigen test or covid symptoms with a “high-risk exposure” to someone who has been confirmed to have coronavirus.
Over the past seven days, Westmoreland County has recorded 175 new cases of the virus. Comparing that with the prior seven-day period (266), it’s a 34% decline. When looked at against the Dec. 12-18 period (395), it’s a 56% drop.
For the past three days, the state has reported Westmoreland County had 153 of its residents hospitalized for covid-19. Monday, that figure dropped to 144. Of those currently in the hospital with the virus, 14 of them are in intensive care units and seven are on a ventilator.
While cases are starting to drop, the covid death rate in the county has remained steady. Over the Sunday-Monday period, the county saw nine new covid-related deaths added to its total, which now stands at 535.
Since the pandemic began in March 2020, 23,253 cases of the virus have been recorded in Westmoreland County, with 16,943 residents confirmed through PCR tests, and 78,188 residents testing negative.
