West Newton police charged a woman with multiple criminal counts after they accused her hitting her boyfriend with an ashtray, causing injury.

Melissa Sue Horner, 37, fled the scene of the alleged assault that occurred in an East Main Street apartment at 12:20 a.m. Saturday that sent a man to Mon Valley Hospital in Carroll Township for treatment of a cut to his head, police said.

Officers arrived on the scene and were met by a man holding a bloody towel on his head covering a “deep gash … about 8-inches long from his right eye across his forehead to the top of his head,” police reported in court papers.

The man told police that Horner and he had gotten into an argument when Horner picked up an ashtray and struck him in the head. He told police that she then ran from the apartment.

Horner was arrested Monday and arraigned on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, harassment and simple assault. She was released on $10,000 unsecured bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled April 18.

Horner could not be reached for comment.

According to online dockets, Horner pleaded guilty in 2019 to a count of simple assault filed by Rostraver police and was sentenced to one year of probation.
