A 35-year-old Unity man was sentenced this week to federal prison on charges of violating narcotics trafficking laws, U.S. Attorney Cindy K. Chung said.

Alan “Mugs” Masecar, currently in the Allegheny County Jail, was sentenced to 51 months in prison, followed by three years supervised release by District Judge Robert J. Colville.

Masecar was arrested in 2020 as a result of a long-term federal and local investigation into drug trafficking through Western Pennsylvania by the Greater Pittsburgh Safe Streets Task Force, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The investigation identified several people suspected of illegally distributing controlled substances.

According to information presented in court, Masecar was involved in the distribution of methamphetamine since 2017 in Allegheny, Erie, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

Investigators identified Masecar as a meth source for among others, co-defendant Zachary Miller of Hempfield, who is a former member of the Jeannette Chapter of the Pagans motorcycle club. Miller, 28, was sentenced this year to 10 years in federal prison for his role.

In December 2019, postal inspectors seized a package containing meth addressed to Masecar, Chung said.

According to court records, investigators searched Masecar’s residence and located numerous items indicative of drug trafficking. Investigators reported Masecar continued to engage in illegal drug trafficking, coordinating additional meth transactions with Miller and continuing to obtain mailed packages containing the drug.

Investigators also identified communications between Miller and Masecar via Facebook messenger to discuss continued efforts to obtain large quantities of meth, according to court documents.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebecca L. Silinski prosecuted the case.

Chung commended the FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, Pennsylvania State Police and Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General Bureau of Narcotics Investigations for assisting in the investigation.
