Troopers: Maryland woman ran with toddler from 2-vehicle crash on Route 30
A 39-year-old woman ran away from a two-vehicle crash early Wednesday on Route 30 in Unity carrying her toddler, state police said.
The woman, Amy M. Bernstein of Hagerstown, Md., was later located and arrested on charges of aggravated assault while drunken driving, child endangerment, hit and run, fleeing the scene of a crash and numerous traffic offenses, according to court records.
Bernstein was travelling east at a high rate of speed on Route 30 when she drove her SUV through a red light at the intersection of Route 981 and struck a northbound car, police said. Bernstein unstrapped her two-year-old son from his car seat after the crash and ran from the scene, police said.
The driver of the other car, Charles Ashbaugh, suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.
A witness provided troopers with a dash cam video recording of the crash that Clark said corroberated Ashbaugh’s claim that Bernstein drove through a red light causing the crash.
Ashbaugh was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment of multiple injuries.
Police found Bernstein “hiding” with her toddler in the parking lot of the nearby Springhill Suites hotel about one-quarter mile away, according to court documents.
The child was transported to a nearby hospital as a precaution.
Bernstein showed signs of impairment, failed multiple field sobriety tests at the scene and “was arrested at the scene for suspicion of DUI,” police said.
According to court dockets, Bernstein was arraigned and released on $25,000 unsecured bond pending a preliminary hearing June 20. Bernstein could not be reached for comment and did not have an attorney listed in court documents.
