State police arrested a 35-year-old Hempfield man Wednesday, accusing him of abusing an infant boy in his care last year, according to court documents.
Matthew Anson Nathaniel Davis, who lives in Carbon, was arraigned on a charge of child endangerment and ordered held in the county jail on $150,000 bond.
According to court documents, the infant was removed from the custody of Davis after the mother left him Oct. 22 and went to a domestic violence shelter.
The infant was admitted to the intensive care unit at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh due to near-fatal brain bleeding after an examination ordered by the Westmoreland County Children’s Bureau, Trooper Philip Dern wrote in court papers.
After his release from the hospital Oct. 29, the infant was placed with a foster family during the state police investigation.
On Nov. 10, Dern said the child was readmitted to the hospital after suffering seizures, which medical personnel said were due to the head injuries, Dern reported.
Dr. Jennifer Wolford, a UPMC pediatrician, told Dern the injuries were the result of being shaken “and a clear indication of child abuse,” according to court documents.
Davis told police he had been physical in the past with the girl’s mother and had seen specialists and undergone therapy over his “anger issues,” Dern wrote in court papers.
Davis told police he watched the infant every two weeks and admitted he was often on the phone with the mother and the boy’s godmother “asking why the infant would not stop crying.”
He said that both the boy’s mother and he often were “aggressive” during arguments.
The mother has not been charged. The investigation is ongoing.
Davis has no prior criminal record in Pennsylvania, according to online court dockets.
He did not have an attorney listed in court documents.
