How do you fill the hours before Thanksgiving dinner is served? You can whet your appetite by participating in the Greensburg Turkey Trot.
After offering a virtual run in 2020, organizers are bringing back the live event, which this year is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
The trot begins at 9 a.m. Nov. 25 at the Westmoreland County Courthouse.
“We’re ready to go,” said race director Carol Palcic. “The sponsorships are already coming in.”
Registration fee is $25 through Nov. 9, then $30 until Nov. 22. New this year is a reduced fee of $15 for children.
“We have so many kids participating, and we didn’t think it was fair for them to have to pay the full price,” she said.
Participants should register by Nov. 1 to be guaranteed a race T-shirt, she said.
For a $50 donation, a name can be added to the shirt’s memorial sleeve, “for those who aren’t here to run with us,” Palcic said.
The T-shirt logo is based on artwork created by the late Gail Bupp, wife of race co-founder Dr. Barry Bupp, a Greensburg dentist. The Bupp’s two grandchildren add their own touches every year to update the original logo, Palcic said.
In 2019, the turkey trot drew a record crowd of 2,500 participants. Palcic said she hopes to set another record this year, with people eager to get out again after the pandemic year.
“We tried the virtual race last year just to keep the event going, and some people actually did come out to the courthouse to run,” she said.
The 5K course traverses downtown Greensburg, south from the courthouse along South Main Street, turning right on Cribbs Street, jogging onto South Hamilton Avenue, turning right on West Pittsburgh Street, left on Bell Way, and right on West Otterman Street to return to the starting point.
Event proceeds will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Laurel Region, Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department, Greensburg YMCA and YWCA Westmoreland County.
