A scheme that police said involved creating fake returns at the North Huntingdon Walmart store led to a Jeannette man pocketing nearly $48,000.
Robert O’Brien, 21, of Jeannette, is awaiting a preliminary hearing next month on charges of theft, receiving stolen property, computer trespass and misapplication of property.
Township police said they were called to the store by two asset protection associates who reported O’Brien would create fake returns on a cash register while he was an employee there and then take a corresponding amount of cash from an office. That happened eight times between June 1 and July 28, police said in court papers.
He was arrested Thursday.
In an interview with police, O’Brien admitted to stealing the money and said he had about $30,000 left. He was released on $25,000 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 6. He hung up on a reporter when contacted by phone Monday.
