State police are trying to identify a man who quickly cut a security cable and stole a push lawnmower last week from the Home Depot store in Hempfield.

The suspect was at the property off Route 30 for less than two minutes, Trooper Steve Limani said. He arrived at 9:40 p.m. April 5, just before the store closed for the night, and parked a light-colored Ram 1500 double cab in front of rows of lawnmowers near the entrance, Limani said. The mowers had security cables attached to them.

The man used a grinder or cutting tool to remove the cable and threw a Toro TimeMaster 30-inch push lawnmower into the bed of his truck. Police said he fled on Route 30 westbound.

The theft was captured on surveillance video. Police released images Monday. Investigators hope someone can identify the man, who was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and lighter pants. His pickup truck had a tri-fold tonneau cover over the bed, Limani said.

That type of lawnmower retails for $1,400, according to Home Depot’s website.

Anyone with information on the incident or the suspect’s identity is asked to call state police at 724-832-3288. Investigators were not able to get information on the vehicle’s license plate from surveillance footage.
