Planned emergency drills at Jeannette schools canceled after 'potential threat'

An emergency drill planned Wednesday in the Jeannette City School District was canceled after secondary school students were dismissed early Tuesday because of a potential threat, according to Superintendent Matt Jones.

A new date for the drill will be announced soon, Jones said in a letter to parents.

The critical incident drill had been scheduled to take place at 9:10 a.m. at the Jeannette Junior-Senior High School on Florida Avenue and at 9:10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the McKee Elementary School on Lowry Avenue. The drill will involve district officials, city police, firefighters and Jeannette EMS.

Teachers, administrators, school board members and city emergency responders will observe staff and student reaction.

Students at Jeannette and Norwin high schools were dismissed at 11 a.m. Tuesday as a precaution after the districts received a threat, according to district officials. A suspect was taken into custody by North Huntingdon police.

Both school buildings were searched and cleared by police.
