The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will honor a late Saint Vincent Archabbey Basilica archabbot during a performance Wednesday in Unity.

The show, “Music for the Spirit,” will pay tribute to Douglas R. Nowicki, OSB, the 11th and second longest-serving archabbot in Saint Vincent’s 178-year history. He oversaw the expansion and renovation of Saint Vincent’s Robert S. Carey Center, as well as the construction of Chuck Noll Field, Fred M. Rogers Center and Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion.

Nowicki served from 1991 through May of 2020, when he retired at age 75. He died four years later in Pittsburgh’s Allegheny General Hospital following a brief illness.

The symphony will perform “Larghetto for Orchestra” in honor of Nowicki. Other selections include “Elysium” by Samy Moussa, “Litanei auf das Fest Aller Seelen” by Franz Schubert and “Notre Dame: Intermezzo” by Franz Schmidt.

Western Pa. native and Grammy Award winning organist Paul Jacobs will conclude the performance.

A reception will be held in Saint Vincent College’s Amil and MaryAnn DiPadova Hall at 5:30 p.m.

General admission tickets cost $30, and reception and reserved seating tickets cost $150. Tickets can be purchased at pittsburghsymphony.org under the “Music for the Spirit at Saint Vincent” tab or by calling 724-805-2177.
