Pennsylvania sees new trend in covid hospitalizations: 3 days of decline

To start the month, the state had increases in covid hospitalizations in 13 of the first 14 days of April. But a trend in the last few days shows numbers going the other way, with hospitalizations in Pennsylvania dropping by about 6% since Wednesday.

Pennsylvania

The state had 2,656 covid-19 patients hospitalized as of Saturday, according to Department of Health data. That total is down 46 from Friday and marks the third decrease in as many days.

The covid hospitalizations total hasn’t decreased for three consecutive days since mid-March.

Pennsylvania reported 4,164 additional covid cases Saturday (3,214 confirmed, 950 probable), per the state Department of Health. The case count is the lowest since Monday’s count of 1,914. The state has reported similar case counts the past three days, each within 40 cases of each other.

There were 45 covid deaths reported Saturday, the lowest of since Monday’s two reported deaths. Total cases and total deaths in Pennsylvania now stand at 1,131,014 and 25,983, respectfully.

In terms of the covid vaccinations, the state now has 1,908,253 people partially and 3,136,599 fully vaccinated as of Saturday, according to state vaccination data. Those figures do not include Philadelphia County, which handles its own vaccine data and distribution.

Allegheny County

In Allegheny County, there were 291 covid patients hospitalized as of Saturday, according to the state Department of Health.

The hospitalization total was up 22 from Friday and erased the previous two days of decrease, when the total had dropped by 21 over the two-day span.

Covid hospitalizations in Allegheny County haven’t been at or exceeded 300 since Feb. 4.

According to the county Health Department, there were 367 additional covid cases reported Saturday, of which 256 were confirmed and 111 were probable. New cases ranged in age from 2 months to 92, with a median age of 30. Since April 15, daily case counts have ranged from 203 to 491 cases and have not exceeded 500 cases.

There were five covid deaths reported Saturday. Of those deaths, two people were in their 50s, one was in their 80s and two were in their 90s, per the county Health Department. Total cases and total deaths in Allegheny County now stand at 95,857 and 1,858, respectfully.

As of Saturday, about 30.7% of the county is fully vaccinated against covid-19. There are currently 254,504 people partially and 376,311 fully vaccinated.

Westmoreland County

In Westmoreland County, current covid hospitalizations decreased slightly from Friday to Saturday, dropping by two, for a total of 50. Hospitalizations have dropped by about 16% since Wednesday when 60 covid-19 patients were hospitalized.

An additional 115 covid cases (52 confirmed, 63 probable) were reported in the county, according to state Department of Health figures.

Westmoreland County’s seven-day case average is now 102, the lowest it has been this month. In the past week, cases have exceeded 100 people three times in the county. In April thus far, daily case counts have topped 100 in 16 of 24 days.

One covid death was also reported Saturday. Total cases and total deaths now stand at 32,136 and 735, respectfully.

With new covid vaccination numbers, Westmoreland County has about 26.3% of its population fully vaccinated. As of Saturday, there are 49,841 people partially and 96,277 fully vaccinated in the county.
