The start of May has seen covid case numbers decline in Pennsylvania. With the declining figures, a key statistic has also dropped to a level it hadn’t been since October.
Cases
Pennsylvania reported 2,385 additional covid cases (1,669 confirmed, 716 probable) to its total Tuesday, according to the state Department of Health.
With that case count, the seven-day case average drops to 2,208, the lowest it has been since Oct. 31. The state has reported less than 3,000 cases a day for the past week. Total cases in the state now stand at 1,177,072.
Allegheny County reported the most cases in the state with 224, followed by Philadelphia (169) and Berks (120).
New cases in Allegheny County ranged in age from one to 94, with a median age of 32, according to the county Health Department. Tuesday’s case count (114 confirmed, 110 probable) keeps the seven-day case average under 200 for the third consecutive day. Prior to the current streak, that hadn’t happened since early November. Daily case counts have been less than 300 thus far in May. The county’s cases total is now 99,384.
In Westmoreland County, 79 additional covid-19 cases (33 confirmed, 46 probable) were reported Tuesday. Those figures bring the seven-day case average (73) to the lowest point in about two months. In May so far, the county has seen covid case counts that were less than 100 in nine of 11 days.
Hospitalizations
The state saw another day of fewer covid hospitalizations Tuesday, according to state Department of Health data. There were 1,751 covid-19 patients hospitalized in Pennsylvania, marking the seventh straight day of decline in hospitalizations. Current covid hospitalizations have declined in 19 of the last 20 days and have dropped 38.3% over that time.
Similarly, Allegheny County has seen a decline in its current covid hospitalization count in 17 of the last 20 days with Tuesday’s figures. The number of people hospitalized for covid-19 has dropped 42.2% over that span. There were 163 covid-19 patients hospitalized Tuesday in Allegheny County.
On Tuesday, there were 24 people hospitalized for covid in Westmoreland County. Hospitalizations in the county have decreased in four of the past five days and are about half of what they were a month ago (47 on April 11).
Vaccinations
Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 6,751,378 Pennsylvanians (52.7% of the population) have at least one dose of a covid vaccine and 4,662,628 (36.4% of population) are fully vaccinated. There are 4,636,855 people age 18 or older fully vaccinated, which is 45.6% of that group. Gov. Tom Wolf has said he would lift the state’s mask mandate when 70% of the state’s adults are fully vaccinated.
In Allegheny County, there are 218,061 people partially and 477,428 fully vaccinated, according to state data. About 56.8% of county residents have at least one dose and about 39% are fully vaccinated.
Westmoreland County has 39,545 people partially and 119,284 fully vaccinated for covid-19. About 43.4% of county residents have at least one dose and about 32.6% are fully vaccinated.
Deaths
An additional 57 covid-related deaths were reported on Tuesday in Pennsylvania, according to the state Department of Health. Of those deaths, 47 are from May, nine are from April and one is from March. Total covid-related deaths in the state are 26,607.
There were three additional covid deaths reported in Allegheny County, according to the county Health Department. One death was from December and two were from May, with one death associated with a long term care facility. Two people were in their 50s and one was in their 100s. Total deaths in the county are now 1,908.
Westmoreland County reported one additional death Tuesday, bringing its total to 749. It was only the third covid-related death reported in a week.
