Guests waited eagerly for a slice of cake on July 29 at You Are Here in Jeannette.
The sweet treat was just one element of a fifth anniversary celebration at the gallery and art space at 406 Clay Ave.
Mary Briggs and Jen Costello founded You Are Here in 2018 not only to host art exhibits, but also to offer classes and workshops, participate in community art and revitalization projects and to house the Oh Scrap! art thrift shop and the Lean on Me Project that donates handmade, one-of-a-kind canes to people with disabilities.
They also offer opportunities for interns, resident artists and online satellite artists.
“I’m so proud of them,” said Costello’s wife, Deb Costello. “They work really hard and they really do a lot for the community.”
The celebration included a buffet table, balloon art, raffles and reggae-style Hawaiian music by Aizeya Rider, who performs as Four String Fighter.
It also served as the opening of an invitational retrospective exhibit by artists and poets who have been involved with the gallery since its inception.
Running through Sept. 9, the exhibit features works in various media by about 30 artists, including the founders.
Seen at the celebration: Dawn Wallhausen, Ray Wallhausen, Dick Nagle, Maddie Jaynes, Don and Marcia Gilbert, Linda Blum, Michaelene McWhinney, Kimberly and Patricia Elliott-Rentler, Phil and Mary Raneri, Steve and Sandi Parsons, Lisa Schau, Amy Roadman, Melissa Reed, Erin Waller, Shaun McGivern, Karen McGivern, Rodney Rager, Michelle Stang and Alexis Dillon.
