Out & About: Lincoln Highway promoters host Roaring 20s anniversary gala

A bevy of modern-day flappers and their dapper dates motored to Latrobe Country Club on Saturday evening for a Roaring 20s Anniversary Celebration hosted by the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor.
The event marked 27 years in business for the organization that promotes the legacy of the 200-mile Pennsylvania stretch of the Lincoln Highway (Route 30), the nation’s first coast-to-coast highway.
Why the odd year for a landmark celebration?
The gala originally was scheduled for May 2020 to mark a quarter-century, but the pandemic put event plans on hold for more than two years.
Many of the 75 guests got in the spirit of the early days of motor travel, with the women in sparkly, fringed dresses and the men in sharp suits and fedoras reminiscent of the 1920s.

The evening started with cocktails, heavy hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and music by Deja Vu, followed by a buffet dinner with entree choices including pan-seared sea bass, bacon-wrapped pork loin and Italian roasted chicken.
LHHC Executive Director Lauren Koker provided guests with a retrospective of the organization’s accomplishments since its founding in 1995.
Those include purchase of the historic Johnston House on Route 30 in Unity to house the Lincoln Highway Experience Museum and creation of a 200-mile Roadside Museum, with murals, interpretive exhibits, photo opportunities, gas pump sculptures and road signs along the highway’s original route from Irwin to Abbottstown in Adams County.

Koker also gave a rundown of future plans and projects, such as a new roof for the Johnston House and continuing outreach to new partners and sponsors — “nothing too sexy,” she said.
A postprandial toast and live auction wrapped up the festivities.
Joining Koker in planning the event were LHHC board members Joan Hawk and Kristin Ecker.
