Excela Health is taking another step outside of Westmoreland County with plans for a $12 million medical complex in Connellsville that could be completed in 2023.
Building the 30,000-square-foot Excela Square outpatient and ambulatory care center in Fayette County is a “logical choice” in extending the health system’s reach, Excela CEO John Sphon said.
“We desire to amplify our presence in the region and extend the availability of our services in a thoughtful and coordinated manner,” he said.
The Greensburg-based health system has undertaken a few other Excela Square projects in recent years, including in Unity and North Huntingdon. A variety of services are available at those locations, including primary care, obstetrics and gynecology and medical specialties. Excela Square at Connellsville is being modeled after those projects, Sphon said.
Officials said physical therapy, laboratory and imaging services also are being considered for Excela Square at Connellsville. All of the offerings will be a complement to what already is in the area while providing patients with access to Excela Health hospitals and specialists if their condition or medical need requires it, Sphon said.
Development at a site in Martin’s Plaza Shopping Center off Route 201 through a long-term lease agreement is in the preliminary stage. After final approvals, construction could begin in 2022, according to health system officials. An additional 35 jobs could be available at the facility outside of current staff who would be transferred there.
Excela Health already operates a cardiology center and lab and imaging facilities in Connellsville and family medicine and orthopedic practices just north of the city.
“We are excited about the positive impact the Excela initiative could have on Connellsville and its residents, from both a health care and economic perspective,’’ Mayor Greg Lincoln said.
