Mutual Aid EMS is hosting a blood drive July 5, two months after paramedics became the first in Westmoreland County to carry blood to emergencies.

The drive, in partnership with the American Red Cross, will be held 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the agency’s EMS base at 561 W. Otterman St., Greensburg. To make an appointment, call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit redcrossblood.org/give.html/find-drive.

Mutual Aid AEMT Caitlin Parker organized the drive in an effort to give back to the agency’s program, which started May 2. Blood is kept in coolers housed in two vehicles that are driven by Mutual Aid district chiefs. They can respond to emergencies where a patient is in hemorrhagic shock and could benefit from blood.

Officials said the availability of blood can help paramedics better care for patients before they get to a hospital.
