Memorial softball tourney set for Jefferson Hills police officer killed in DUI crash
A memorial softball tournament for a Jefferson Hills police officer who was killed in 2020 crash involving a drunk driver will be held Sunday at the John DiVirgilio Sports Complex off Municipal Road in Rostraver.
The second annual Dale Provins Memorial Softball Tournament is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. with opening ceremonies and the first pitch thrown by Rostraver Township Police Chief John Christner. In addition to Provins’ family, a representative of the Jefferson Hills Police Department is expected to attend.
Proceeds from the double elimination softball tournament will benefit the endowed Dale Provins Memorial Scholarship that has been established at California University of Pennsylvania in the officer’s memory.
Provins, 50, of Rostraver, was a fulltime police officer with Jefferson Hills when he was fatally injured June 3, 2020, in a collision while on patrol along Old Clairton Road. He died from his injuries 10 days later. The driver of the other vehicle, Zachary W. Foltz, 25, of Homestead, pleaded guilty last month to homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and was sentenced by an Allegheny County judge to serve three to six years in state prison followed by four years of probation.
Provins was a Marine Corps veteran and a member of the Mon Valley Center for Fitness & Health in Rostraver.
The Cal U Office of Military & Veterans Affairs is sponsoring the tournament, in conjunction with the Mon Valley Center for Fitness & Health and the Pennsylvania State Police.
