Ligonier Valley dance canceled, citing bad student behavior

A middle school dance scheduled for Friday night was abruptly canceled at Ligonier Valley Middle School because of student “disrespect and misconduct,” according to a letter sent to parents.

The letter, signed by middle school Principal Paulina Burns, said that students’ behavior at recent events “has fallen short of our expectations” to create a safe and inclusive environment.

“As educators, it is our responsibility to address these issues promptly and take appropriate action to ensure the well-being of our students,” Burns said. “Canceling the dance serves as a reminder that disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated within our school community. We believe it is essential to reinforce the values of respect, kindness, and inclusivity among our students.”

A replacement end-of-year dance event will be scheduled during school hours for students who act respectfully, according to the letter.

School officials could not be reached for further comment Friday afternoon on the specifics of the misconduct.

The letter apologized “for any inconvenience caused” and for disappointing students, and encouraged parents to discuss respectful behavior with their children.

“By fostering open dialogue and encouraging empathy, we can help our students maximize individual potential,” Burns said.
