An Irwin resident this week pleaded with borough officials to have the police take action to prevent residents from setting off “excessive fireworks” over the upcoming July 4 holiday.

Jennifer Incheck of Melrose Avenue told council this week that the fireworks set off in her Penglyn neighborhood over the July 4 holiday last year was “pretty bad.” That kind of noise “really bothers my husband,” she said.

Police did respond to complaints about the fireworks, but it didn’t prevent people from setting them off, Incheck said.

A state act passed in 2017 prohibits people from setting off fireworks within 150 feet of an occupie structure,

Chief Dan Wensel said law it is hard to enforce. Trying to find where someone ignited fireworks that land in another place is difficult, and it happens in multiple places, Wensel said.

Police can issue a warning to someone setting off fireworks that are within 150 feet of an occupied structure, then cite them if they continue, Wensel said.
