Six students from Westmoreland County finished Revolutionary Kids Summer Camp at Historic Hanna’s Town in Hempfield, just in time for this weekend’s Civil War encampment and re-enactment.

On the last day of of camp, students were treated to a blacksmith demonstration by Rex Baughman of Hempfield. He started off by showing them how to form an arrowhead, and finished with a twisted “S” hook hanger. Along the way he let the campers pump the blower on the forge to keep the fire going, and showed them how to apply beeswax to the finished product to help deter oxidation.

On Saturday the encampment begins at 9:30 a.m. with a battle re-enactment at 2 p.m. Sunday features an artillery demonstration at 12:30 p.m with the re-enactment following at 1:30 p.m.

The full schedule can be found at the Westmoreland Historical Society’s website, westmorelandhistory.org.
