5 things to do in Westmoreland County this weekend: July 19-21
At last, it might not be too hot to spend some time outdoors. Here are some things to get you outside while the temperatures are more temperate — or stay in the air conditioning — this weekend.
Parish festival
Come out for a day of family, fun and fellowship at the Saint Vincent Basilica Parish Festival on Saturday. The day will include food booths, music, a Kids’ Zone and an “Area 21” by All Saints Brewing.
Food will include hamburgers and hot dogs, haluski, pierogies, ice cream and more. Music will be provided by DJ Pete Highlands from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the Mon Valley Push polka group starting at 3 p.m.
There will also be pony rides for children from noon to 5 p.m.
The festival will kick off at 10 a.m. and go until 8 p.m. at Saint Vincent Grove, 320 Monastery Drive, Unity. Get the details at basilicaparish stv.org.
The music of Billy Joel
Who knew the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra would pair so well with the music of Billy Joel? This Saturday at The Palace Theatre, the Symphony Orchestra, along with vocals and music from Jeans ’n Classics, will present many of Joel’s hit tunes.
The music begins at 7:30 p.m. at The Palace Theatre, 21 W. Otterman St., Greensburg, and tickets range in price from $20-$75. Get them at thepalacetheatre.org.
‘Twisters’ at the drive-in
“Twisters,” the sequel to the 1996 blockbuster disaster film “Twister,” opens in theaters this weekend, and Evergreen Drive-In Theater, at 309 Drive-In Lane, East Huntingdon, will host a special event in celebration.
Before showings of the movie on both Friday and Saturday nights, a number of storm chasers from around the region will be at the drive-in to chat about extreme weather. This includes Westmoreland County’s PA Storm Trackerz, along with several other individuals and organizations.
Gates open at 7:30 p.m. both evenings. Admission for those 12 and older is $11 and cash only. Learn more at the theater’s website at evergreen drivein.com.
Summer artisan market
Spend your Saturday browsing the goods for sale at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art’s Summer Artisan Market. The market will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and admission is free. There will be food for purchase and acoustic music by Brett Mason Music.
Items for sale include jewelry, textiles, art and home goods. The museum is at 221 N. Main St., Greensburg. Get more information at thewestmoreland.org.
SummerSounds: The Claudettes
The free SummerSounds concert series continues this week at St. Clair Park in Greensburg with The Claudettes. Bending genres with their sophisticated, electrifying sound, The Claudettes are an intriguing blend of jazz, rock, blues and even punk.
The main event will begin at 7 p.m., with preshow music at 6:15 p.m. by Skye Burkett. Learn more about the band at summersounds.com.
