Greensburg’s Summer in the City is back for a third year, with a new single-day format.

Free activities for all ages — including live music, backyard games and firefighter demonstrations — are set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Pitt-Penn parking lot along South Pennsylvania Avenue.

A second, ticketed portion of the event, “Cool Sips in the City,” is set for 5 to 8 p.m. at the same location, featuring adult beverage tastings and a corn hole competition.

Last year’s event stretched over three days, beginning on a Thursday, but planners noted Greensburg’s popular SummerSounds concerts are held on Fridays.

“We didn’t want to take away from that event,” said Amy Beeghly, president of the Greensburg Business & Professional Association, which is organizing Summer in the City in partnership with Greensburg Community Development Corporation.

“We decided to make it an all-day event,” she said. “We’ll have all kinds of activities and entertainment.”

The day will kick off with a free 10:30 a.m. pet parade, with pets and their owners marching along sidewalks from the Petagogy pet supply store, 240 E. Pittsburgh St., to the Pitt-Penn lot. A pet photo booth and doggie splash pool will be available. The first 50 participants will get a swag bag.

During the program beginning at 11 a.m., attendees can check out other types of animals at the Critter Corner, enter a chalk art contest or sit for a caricature drawn by editorial cartoonist Randy Bish.

Local personalities will risk getting wet in a dunking booth, with proceeds benefiting a planned educational trip to Costa Rica next summer by members of Greensburg Salem School District’s Bio Club.

Two local youth performance groups will entertain: Westmoreland Performing Arts at 12:30 p.m. and Stage Right at 2:30 p.m. The Pittsburgh band Neon Witch Parade will play original rock and blues tunes.

The Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department bloodhound team will demonstrate search-and-rescue techniques.

Kids activities will include a pinata and The Great Gem Dig.

Admission to the ticketed evening event costs $10 and includes an event drinking vessel and music by The Phisbins.

“It’s geared to adults, but kids can come, too,” Beeghly said. “There is no charge for kids.”

Beverage tastings will be offered by Bella Terra Vineyards, Laurel Highlands Meadery, La Vigneta Winery, Raspberry Acres Winery, Stonebridge Brewing Company and The Kentlee.

Activities include a corn hole competition, beginning at 6 p.m., Paint-n-Sip, additional chances at the dunking booth and more pinatas — one for kids and one for adults.

“We’ll have a raffle going on to encourage people to shop while they’re downtown,” said Beeghly.

Those who make a purchase Saturday at a participating store will have a chance to win a $100 gift certificate to a local shop of one’s choice.
