A Greensburg teen charged with the attempted homicide of three people will be prosecuted as a juvenile, a judge ruled this week.

Anthony Shook, 17, originally was charged as an adult with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and other offenses after he was arrested in June 2021 in connection with a shootout in the parking lot of the Eastmont Estates apartment complex. Shook, who was 16 at the time of the incident, was injured in the shooting.

Police said Shook and another teen, Jaron Malik Haten-McCoy, then 17, confronted three people. Witnesses claimed Haten-McCoy shot at the trio.

Shook suffered gunshot wounds to his leg and hand during the confrontation.

Westmoreland County prosecutors did not oppose the transfer of Shook’s case.

“(A psychologist) evaluated Anthony Shook and determined that he would be amenable to treatment in the juvenile court system,” District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli said in an emailed statement.

If convicted in juvenile court, Shook cannot be held in custody beyond his 21st birthday.

Earlier this year, a judge rejected a request from Haten-McCoy, now 19, of Cheswick, Allegheny County, to have his case transferred to juvenile court.

His trial is scheduled to start Oct. 17.
