A record number of skaters has been hitting the ice in the 16 months since Greensburg completed a $3 million renovation of its Kirk S. Nevin ice arena.

Parks and recreation superintendent Glenn Moyer said there are more teams than ever competing with the Westmoreland Hockey Association.

“We’ve seen outstanding numbers for both our public sessions and our intro to skating,” he said.

Renovations were completed during summer 2023, and there have been no issues with the new equipment. The arena’s 27-year-old refrigeration system was replaced with a new system that uses a less costly, environmentally friendly refrigerant.

As part of the project, crews removed the rink’s concrete floor and replaced piping and sand underneath. The renovation included new heating units for the arena lobby and related electrical work.

Much of the project cost was covered by grants, including $1.5 million from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources that was part of covid-19 pandemic recovery funding.

Hockey games start at the arena in September, and there are fall programs ongoing now, Moyer said. Public skate sessions have been busy, but he anticipates them to draw in more skaters during the winter months. He didn’t have specific attendance figures but said the arena has been seeing high ice use.

Westmoreland Hockey Association, a youth hockey organization, has 13 teams, which is “the most that I’ve ever seen them have,” Moyer said.

Public skating sessions are held throughout the week and costs range from $6 to $7 depending on age. Skate rental is $3. A Skate With Santa event is set for Sunday at the arena at Lynch Field, off New Alexandria Road. Pictures with Santa will be from 2 to 3 p.m. followed by a skating event with him from 3 to 4 p.m.
