Dick Byers of Stahlstown uses his binoculars to observe birds with the Bushy Run bird count circle on Dec. 28, 2016, along the Beaver Run Reservoir.

The Greensburg Group of Ten will hold its first Green Gathering from 2-4 p.m. June 2 at Major Stokes restaurant, 108 W. Pittsburgh St., to celebrate “Environmental Westmoreland County.”

The public event includes music by Mark Weakland and book-signing and sale with retired biology teacher Dick Byers of Stahlstown, author of “Natural Areas In and Around Westmoreland County.”

According to Paula Purnell, Greensburg Group of Ten chair, the event is for those interested in clean air, water and streams; healthy forests and farms; sustainability and recycling; and other aspects of the environment.

They are invited to meet with other environmentally minded people, and receive updates about environmental issues and events in the community.

Group of Ten is a Clean Air Council initiative, inviting small groups of concerned neighbors to learn about air pollution sources and build their capacity to address air quality issues affecting their lives.

“We are extremely fortunate to live in this beautiful county. We want to work to preserve and strengthen it. Our Green Gathering is a chance to meet with others who feel the same way, exchange ideas and strategize for a sustainable future,” Purnell says.

Byers and volunteers, many from the Westmoreland Bird and Nature Club, set out to document the natural areas within a 35-mile radius of Greensburg, encompassing 98 distinct locations.

His book compiles the natural spaces unique to Westmoreland County.

Pittsburgh-area singer/songwriter Weakland will perform and light snacks will be provided. Additional food and drinks can be purchased at the restaurant.
