A 14-year-old girl was hospitalized Saturday after state police said she was hit by an SUV in Unity.

The crash happened at 11:30 a.m. on Sussex Way. Troopers said a 40-year-old woman had pulled out of a driveway and was headed down the street when the girl stepped in front of the vehicle.

The nature of her injuries was unclear. She was taken by ambulance to Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, police said.

The driver was not hurt.

Pennsylvania averaged about 4,100 crashes involving pedestrians annually between 2015 and 2019, according to PennDOT statistics. About 40% of the 2019 crashes involving a pedestrian occurred when the person was crossing a street.

Crashes involving pedestrians made up a small percentage of total crashes statewide — about 3% in both 2018 and 2019, according to PennDOT. There were 154 pedestrian deaths in Pennsylvania in 2019.
