Citing ongoing health concerns and family considerations, longtime Franklin Regional School District band director Lawrence Silvestri announced his retirement Saturday, according to band officials.
Silvestri’s immediate retirement was announced Saturday via private email forwarded through acting marching band director Nick Nutter to high school marching band members and parents.
“Yes, I can confirm he is retiring,” Nutter said by telephone Sunday.
The sudden retirement shocked many, as the 185-member band plans to depart Thursday for Disney World in Orlando, Fla., where they will participate in a parade through the park. The band’s trip lasts through Feb. 7.
Nutter said he will lead the Florida trip.
Nutter said Silvestri resigned because of ongoing medical concerns. His father, Frank, 94, passed away Dec. 25. Silvestri told band members he also needs to care for his mother, June.
A copy of the letter was provided to the Tribune-Review on Sunday by an affiliate with the band.
Because of ongoing medical treatments, and on doctor’s advice, Silvestri said in the letter, “I have decided to move on to the next stage of my life.”
“It has been an honor and a privilege to have been able to direct such a fine group of students with awesome parents who support the program. I will miss directing the band and all of the students and parents I have had the opportunity to work with over the years,” Silvestri said.
Silvestri also said he will hold memories of the many football seasons and “thousands” of students and parents whom he has worked with over the years.
“You are in great hands with Mr. Nutter, Mr. (Brian) Coiner (assistant band director), and Miss (Ashley) Brett (band front coordinator),” Silvestri wrote.
“Enjoy your Disney trip! Well deserved award for your hard work with the incredible show you performed this past season!” Silvestri concluded.
Superintendent Gennaro R. Piraino Jr. said Sunday the school administration had not received any formal letter from Silvestri regarding retirement and, therefore, he could not comment on the matter.
Silvestri took over as lead band director in 2020 after the retirement of Kevin Pollock at the end of the 2019-2020 school year.
Attempts to reach Silvestri, 57, for comment were unsuccessful.
