A flower photography workshop is planned for Sept. 27 at Historic Hanna’s Town in Hempfield.

Members of the Westmoreland Photographers Society will present a half-day workshop on the do’s and don’ts of flower photography on Sept. 27 at Historic Hanna’s Town in Hempfield.

The workshop, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will include an introduction to camera techniques and composition applicable to flower photography, an on-site photo scavenger hunt and a photo critique session.

Participants will capture images of the pollinator gardens at the restored historical site, which Westmoreland Historical Society staff and volunteers have cultivated to restore the late 18th-century environment.

“This photography workshop gives visitors the chance to explore our pollinator gardens through a creative lens. Flowers like goldenrods and asters will be in bloom,” said Pam Curtin, WHS education coordinator. “Our native plants help support insects and birds in the fall.”

Workshop participants should bring a camera or smartphone and a lunch. Although not required, participants also can bring an on- or off-camera flash and a tripod.

Although the workshop is suitable for all ages and skill levels, those attending should have a working knowledge of their camera or smartphone.

“Photography is a great way to sharpen your attention to detail and discover how shapes, patterns, colors and light interact with one another in nature,” Curtin said.

The gardens are part of an effort to expand educational and recreational opportunities for visitors, create new habitats and food sources for insects and birds, remove invasive species, reduce mowing and increase ecological diversity at Historic Hanna’s Town, according to a release.

The site also is a member of the Westmoreland Pollinator Partners. An initiative of the Loyalhanna Watershed Association formed in 2019, the group of nonprofits, schools and community gardens is dedicated to promoting, protecting and preserving pollinators and their habitats.

New gardens recently were added as part of Eagle Scout projects and plans are in the works for additional garden space.

Workshop fee is $10 per person. Registration is required by Sept. 23 at 724-836-1800 or westmorelandhistory.org.

Information on covid-19 safety procedures at Hanna’s Town also can be found on the website.
