Greensburg volunteer firefighters spray foam on a smoldering fire at the Westmoreland Equestrian Center along Route 66 in Hempfield Thursday. The stubborn fire started Saturday afternoon with roughly 300 round bales of hay and has been smoking since.

Greensburg and Hempfield fire crews Thursday put an end to smoldering from a fire that destroyed a storage barn Saturday afternoon at a Hempfield equestrian center.

The fire briefly closed a section of Business Route 66 Saturday and ravaged a storage barn after a stubborn fire broke out, burning about 300 circle bales of hay.

The hay continued to smoke and smolder, sparking concerns from nearby respiratory-challenged residents.

Greensburg firefighters used a high expansion foam to douse the smoke that hung a cloud over the Westmoreland Equestrian Center this week, said fire Chief Tom Bell. A Hempfield tanker supplied water to help snuff out the smoke, he said.

Crews were there for about two to three hours Thursday morning.
